On 15 July 2008, Sadler’s Wells was bursting at the seams with music and dance; including a Big Band, Scottish piper, a wind quartet, site-specific dance and Cutlery Concerto, a piece for voice, strings and cutlery, that filled the foyers and outdoor spaces at the beginning of the evening.
Performances in the main auditorium began with choristers singing the Excellent! anthem, composed for the event by Howard Goodall. Following this there was a classical work created and performed by the Royal Ballet School and Yehudi Menuhin School, one of fourteen specially commissioned music and dance collaborations that also included a piece choreographed by Henri Oguike to music composed by Keith Tippett and a new piece composed by John Woolrich for The Sage Gateshead Weekend School.
During the interval, audiences were treated to more performances in the foyers and the second half of the performance was signalled by a specially- commissioned fanfare, which schools entered a unique competition to compose and perform. The evening closed with a Big Band reprisal of the Excellent! Anthem.
